About the Role

Pre-series A Open-source startup is looking for Staff Engineers. This is a full remote position for now, but the company will be opening an office in the Bay Area and will want team members to work 2-3 days a week in the office once open within 6-12 months. Candidates must reside in the SF area and be willing to eventually work in a hybrid model. Experience in open-source projects or developer tools, along with a strong TypeScript background, is essential. The company does not offer sponsorship and is looking for candidates who can take ownership and have startup experience.

You will be an experienced backend-focused cloud engineer who thrives in designing and deploying scalable, cloud-native applications. You should have deep expertise in TypeScript, Kubernetes, and Docker with a strong emphasis on backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and distributed architectures.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect and develop scalable, self-hostable cloud-native applications that run across multi-cloud and on-prem environments.
  • Design and implement backend infrastructure, APIs, and system integrations that support high-scale developer workflows.
  • Optimize containerized deployments using Kubernetes, Docker, and Helm, ensuring high availability and seamless automation.
  • Lead best practices for intra-application communication, distributed systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with open-source contributors, enterprise teams, and cloud engineers to build highly flexible and extensible developer tools.
  • Build infrastructure that enables millions of developer interactions while ensuring security, performance, and scalability.
  • Own deployments across AWS, Azure, and GCP with a cloud-agnostic design.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong backend engineering expertise in Node.js / TypeScript (5+ years)
  • Deep experience with Kubernetes—container orchestration, Helm charts, and cluster management.
  • Hands-on Docker expertise in optimizing containerized environments.
  • Experience designing self-hosted and cloud-native applications that operate in hybrid cloud/on-prem environments.
  • Strong AWS experience with an understanding of cloud-native patterns and infrastructure design.
  • High autonomy with the ability to lead and execute complex projects with minimal guidance.
  • Deep understanding of intra-application communication and backend system optimization.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with Azure and GCP—multi-cloud deployment expertise.
  • Background in DevOps, CI/CD automation, and cloud security.
  • Experience building developer tools, SDKs, and open-source platforms.
  • Strong understanding of distributed computing and scalable backend architectures.
  • Experience with LLMs or AI-native infrastructure.
  • Python experience for backend automation and AI-driven integrations.
